Iron Infusion

What is an iron infusion?

Iron infusion is an intravenous iron preparation, which is given directly into the blood stream through a vein. Each administration of iron infusion should take approximately 15 minutes. Additionally, you will be monitored for 30 minutes after the infusion.

Iron infusion is given in the treatment of iron deficiency conditions. Iron is an essential element required for the oxygen-carrying capacity of haemoglobin in red blood cells and of myoglobin in muscle tissue. Moreover, iron plays an important role in many other vital processes in the human body, such as muscle strength, energy and improved cognitive function.

What are the symptoms of iron deficiency?

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional deficiency in Australia. Common symptoms include:

  • Fatigue - mental and physical

  • Reduced cognitive function

  • Repeated headaches

  • Cold intolerance

  • Shortness of breath

  • Palpitations

Who should get an iron infusion?

Iron infusion is given for the treatment of patients with iron deficiency, when oral iron preparations are ineffective or cannot be used. The aim of the therapy is to replenish body iron stores and to remedy anaemia, a reduced level of haemoglobin due to iron deficiency. It is also used when there is a clinical need to deliver iron rapidly.
Before administration, your doctor will perform a blood test to calculate the dose of the iron preparation you require.

Iron infusion is not recommended to patients:

  • With hypersensitivity to ferric carboxymaltose or any of the other ingredients of the iron preparation

  • Who have anaemia not caused by iron deficiency

  • Who have iron overload (too much iron in your body) or disturbances in utilisation of iron

  • Under the age of 14 years
