The Australian Government Department of Health advises that everyone over 6 months of age receive the influenza vaccine every year. This is because the most common strains of the virus that cause influenza change every year. Therefore, the vaccine also changes to match these different strains.

Seasonal influenza, more commonly referred to as the flu, is a highly contagious respiratory illness that manifests in symptoms like fevers, chills, muscle aches, coughs and congestion. It is especially serious for infants, people over 65 years of age and pregnant women, which is the reason why the flu vaccine is provided without cost for these groups of people under the National Immunisation Program.
